Australian Opal Cabochons

Australian opals are known as the "queen of gems".  They offer the most variety of any colored gemstone.  Poetry, stories and songs have been written attempting to describe the beauty and depth of Australian opals, particularly the spectacular Lightning Ridge black opal.

Many people believe that all opals from the Lightning Ridge fields are Australian black opals.  That isn't true.  In order to be a true Australian black opal, the background color of the gem must meet certain criteria that have been established by the Lightning Ridge Miner's Association. 

Lightning Ridge black opals are almost never calibrated due to the extremely rare material.  They are usually cut to follow the "fire", allowing for the largest and best freeform stone possible. 

Along with the rare Lightning Ridge black opal, we offer varieties from the Australian fields of Coober Pedy, Mintabie, and Lambina. 

All of the opals we offer have been cut from rough that was mined at least a decade ago.  These opals are stable.  

All of our opals are solid Australian opals.  We do not offer doublets or triplets.
