Burro Creek Agate Rough and Slabs
Burro Creek agate is found not far from
the town of Nothing, Arizona. While I wouldn't say that
Nothing is nothing, it certainly isn't much. Nothing is
one of many tiny southwestern towns that don't seem to have a
reason to exist, other than possibly as a pit stop while en
route to another destination. Nothing does have a nice
rock shop.
Burro Creek is a well known site that
includes Burro Creek agate,
Apache tears, opalite, and
other rocks. If you're going to collect there, don't forget your
gloves and boots. This site has one of the most vile
plants in the world: the jumping cholla.
My first experience with this cactus was an
unpleasant one. I had walked through a pile of cholla
spines, thinking that since I was wearing boots, no harm
would be done. For the next week I was pulling cholla
spines out of the bottom of my feet. These little devils
had gone clear through the bottom of my thick boots and worked
their way into my hide.
Some people swear that if you get too close
to a jumping cholla they will shoot their spines at you. I
know I have had them in my skin when I hadn't been within
two feet
of the plant, so maybe there is some truth to this.
The Burro Creek area has agates of many
colors, ranging from purple and blue to various shades of brown
and tan. These are the Burro Creek agate we currently have
